Purple Hibiscus

In Purple Hibiscus I have noticed that there are a lot of gender issues. Not only does Papa beat Mama, but he also does not invest as much into Kambili's education because she is a female. The society also expects women to look away at certain mmuo because some are too scary or not appropriate subjects for women to look at. Kambili and her family also hold the belief that it is sinful for women to wear pants or shorts. All of these suggest Kambili's society and her family to be sexist.

I've also noticed that Kambili's family is against tradition. They are serious, too. For example, Kambili's father hates when people speak Igbo. Although, Igbo is their native language. Papa also can't stand his father because he is a traditionalist. An instance where Kambili's family was very serious was when she dreamed she was laughing, but she didn't know what her laugh sounded like (88). This shows that Kambili never really laughed.

The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away.  Once there was this and that; and now--and the ship had gone. [... Where Is It?

               Dr. Dean, a cardiac surgeon, hears the dreaded noise. Oh no, not that noise , Dr. Dean thinks to himself. He rushes to find the defibrillator.                "Where is it, where is it?" Dr. Dean whispers in a frustrated voice, meanwhile seeing no sign of the defibrillator he most desperately needed.                The nurses rush in. The anesthesiologist checks her calculations, making sure she did not make the mistake no one wanted to have to break to Bill's parents. Surgeons sprinting to find the nearest doctor that could help.                "How could I have let this happen? I promised them he would be okay," Dr. Dean says, anxiously still looking for the stubborn instrument.                It has been fifteen minutes, no progress has been made on the hunt for the defibrillator. Dr. Dean's glimmer in his eyes flickers out. He realizes he must break the news to the parents. He walks, slowly, keeping track of each new step he takes.
